Imperial Beach is roughly sixteen miles south of San Diego. It is considered the most southwesterly town of the continental United States. It is a fine beach community and in subtle ways continues to mirror the lifestyle made popular by California surfing music and movies, much inline with the Beach Boys vibe. The community energy is strong in “IB” and the inhabitants are relaxed and welcoming. It’s a perfect place for relaxing in the ocean breeze in California for those on a tight budget. The town is 20 miles south of Downtown San Diego and several miles short of the Mexican border.
Bordered by the South San Diego Bay and Pacific Ocean, the vicinity is snuggled between miles of open space beaches, wetlands teeming with wildlife, and big surf. Because the area is one of the last untainted beach towns in Southern California, it is labeled “Classic Southern California.” The wonders never cease in this splendid town from nature walks to beautiful sunsets, the city offers it all.
Surf, swim, sunbathe, jog, fishing, or just spending the day playing in the sand is just a cool way to chill out in “IB.” It has a laidback style. With some of the best sand in the country and home to the annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition, there’s plenty activities with basketball and volleyball in the area, and places to park and picnic. The Beach Fishing Pier is much-loved for surf fishing. A stroll to the beach from Border Field State Park is a one of a kind experience; it’s one of the last untouched beaches in the southern part of California.
Nature lovers are amazed at the wildlife sanctuaries and state park just south of the town. The Border Field State Park, Tijuana River National Estuarine Sanctuary, and the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge are fantastic opportunities for hiking and bird watching. In fact, the district is domicile to 370 species of birds and deemed one of the leading birding areas in Southern California.
There is great shopping south of the border in Tijuana. Home town goodies at places like Grandma’s Pantry Restaurant and Bakery are not to be missed. You will also find pizza and taco joints along Seacoast Drive and Palm Avenue.
There are eight K-12 schools in the area counting seven public schools and one private school. The area’s public schools are part of two districts, Sweetwater Union High School District and South Bay Union Elementary School District.
