Burrowed between delicately rolling hills and situated close to several revitalizing lakes, Santee provides the comfortable handiness of urban living with the tranquility and safety of the countryside. Sound government customs and a healthy financial base ensure a prosperous future for the region.
The town was established at the end of 1980. The city became a Charter City at the beginning of 2009. With a resident population of 56,000 and positioned in eastern San Diego County, the town is the twelfth largest county of eighteen cities. With roughly half of its territory undeveloped, the region is one of the few municipalities in the county with room to expand.
Since its inception, the district has continuously labored to improve the community’s quality of life. To accomplish just that, the community’s City Council accepted the Town Center Specific Plan, a 700 acre diverse development on both sides of the San Diego River. The project will incorporate a number of projects such as open space, multi-family residential homes, a high-tech office park, and a proposed 55-acre area park for recreational use. The eastern terminus of the San Diego Trolley is in the Town Center and includes a key shopping center.
Two new freeways SR-125 and SR-52 have been expanded into the town. In the undeveloped northern part of the region, encircling nearly 25% of the district, is an area called Fanita Ranch. The area, which is 2600 acres, is foreseen as an important master planned kinship offering high quality recreation and residential accommodation.
The community’s school district and the Grossmont Union High School are amongst the best, having received several local, state, and national honors for academic brilliance. In addition, the schools offer superb extracurricular activities from fine arts to sports. Furthermore, University of San Diego, University of California at San Diego, and San Diego State University are close by.
There are roughly 125 full time workers, in addition to part time and contract employees who serve the community. The city’s police force is contracted with the County of San Diego. In fact, the district is one of the safest in San Diego County.
Dissimilar to some other regions where blue collar or white collar workers dictate the local economy, the town is neither predominately one or the other. The workforce is a combination of the two. Overall, the region is a city of managers, professionals, office workers, and sales persons. The educational level of Santee residents is a bit higher than the average for the country. Over 21% of adults in the district have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
